Tales of Toilet Training

Hands up if you were/are looking forward to toilet training? Yeah not me. But to be fair, it hasn’t been as bad as I thought and Hallie has been really good at it – but it is still work.

We are coming out the other side now, and I can see light at the end of the tunnel, she is even dry at night – she just needs to master the pulling down of the pants & clothes herself.

We did use a potty to begin with, one that looks like a little toilet, and I suppose that worked to get her started, but it wasn’t long before it was ditched for the toilet anyway.

It started like this…

Lots of sitting around the toilet waiting for something to happen…or for the novelty of sitting on a toilet to pass. She has a toilet seat and a step that she loves.

And and the following week she was rocking her new nappy free lifestyle at her Music Bugs class.

She looks like she is about to wee here – she wasn’t thank goodness 🙂

She started to show mild interest back in May, just before we went on holiday, but we decided it wouldn’t be right for her or us to try and do it on holiday, and you all have to be invested.

She wasn’t too keen when we got back but also hated her nappies, we started to go into it a bit half hearted and letting her have a nappy when she pushed for one. I think one of our mistakes was letting her have a lot of nappy free time hoping she would use the toilet more, which she did – but only wanted to be nappy free or in nappies.

Then one weekend I was going away and we started trying her with pants, so whilst I was away Matt just kept her in pants, spending one day at home to get her used to know when she should go to the toilet and then the next day he jumped straight into taking her for a day out in her pants and it just seemed to work (lucky for him 😉 )

We went into it with no clue what we were doing (and still don’t) but just went with our instincts and what worked for Hallie. If I was to do it again I would…

  • Miss out the potty – she asks for big girl toilet the majority of the time anyway and it is less clean up!
  • Get them in pants sooner – if they have an accident it doesn’t matter and they seem to learn quicker.
  • Just go for it, half hearted doesn’t work, you’ve just got to bite the bullet.
